Dresden Soul
Хм. Мне больше нравится "The game is afoot", чем "The game is on".

The game is on - Mr Doyle
The game is afoot - all others)
But really, yeah, sounds much prettier. However, I prefer "on" as it's simplier for understanding by "noobs" like me)))

Beam me up, Scotty!
Quite on the contrary, my dear.)
"The game is afoot" is a canonical phrase in ACD's books. (also, it is Shakespeare, but... it was used by SH as well)
"The game is on" is from Sherlock BBC. Sounds much more contemporary, yeah.

OK. I can't find it but I was pretty sure it was there. Maybe, I am wrong... But still for oral speech "the game is on" is better. But for written part "the game is afoot" looks more favorable.

Beam me up, Scotty!
The book is "The Return of Sherlock Holmes". Story: The Adventure of the Abbey Grange.
"Come, Watson, come!" he cried. "The game is afoot. Not a word! Into your clothes and come!" (Page 636)

I was talking about other stories) Maybe, Mr Doyle uses both?

Beam me up, Scotty!
Nah, can't find anything with "on". And due to Mr Doyle's tendency to a certain style...
But "The game is afoot" also can be found in a lot of dramatisations.

Ok, I will agree that you are right even for only reason that I don't want to argue)
Sure, there are a lot of reasons behind, but they are not public)
